    Submission Guidelines

1

Who are our authors?

  • Currently, we only accept work from matriculated Hamilton College students.

2

What are we looking for?

  • We publish academic, critical work in the humanities and social sciences. Interdisciplinary work is welcome and encouraged.

    • We lean towards the “social” side of “social sciences,” meaning we're looking for essays in that field that address social issues, social life, or arts and culture.

  • All essays should be previously unpublished and written in English.

  • We gravitate towards work that's eloquent and analytical, yet written in language that's accessible to the general public. Essays that require extensive prior knowledge of the subject or that are full of jargon will not be accepted, no matter how well-written they are. If you're using discipline-specific terms, please define them.

What are we not looking for?

  • We don't publish creative writing of any kind or essays solely concerning Classics, Greek, or Latin. Interdisciplinary work that involves Classics may be considered, depending on whether or not it can be classified as humanities.

  • Work that prioritizes quantitative analysis, such as lab reports, will not be accepted either.

Are there any other guidelines?

  • You can submit up to three essays to suture@hamilton.edu per submission period, either in the same email or separately.

  • Submissions should be sent as a Word or Google Doc.

  • The minimum word count is 1500 words, although longer work is ideal.

  • In accordance with our blind selection process, direct identifying information (your name in the heading, etc.) should be removed from all documents.

  • While we consider submissions written in accordance with any style guide, our journal follows MLA guidelines. All accepted authors must reformat non-MLA essays within the provided time frame.

Still debating whether to submit your work?

"I submitted to Suture for the opportunity to showcase my academic work. The feedback and editing process was extremely helpful in developing my paper to its next level. I appreciate Suture for giving me a spot within this semester's issue."
